Dwayne Wade Clarifies Olympic Compensation Comments

At the Miami Heat practice on Wednesday, Dwayne Wade was asked about the Olympic basketball players being compensated for their participation.

“First of all, it’s an honor to play in the Olympics, but there are a lot of things you do for the Olympics,” Wade said.

Dwyane Wade #9 of the United States drives to the basket over the defense of Marc Gasol #13 of Spain during the gold medal game against Spain during Day 16 of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Gymnasium on August 24, 2008 in Beijing, China.

“A lot of jerseys you sell. There are a lot of things you do. We play the whole summer. I do think guys should be compensated, just like I think college players should be compensated, as well. Unfortunately, it’s not that, but I think it should be something for it.”

As the story escalated throughout the day, Wade decided to issue a few clarifications later Wednesday on his Twitter account.

1st Tweet: “I’m reading a lot of reports coming out about my comments re: the Olympics and compensation. I want to clear this up personally….”

2nd Tweet: “I responded 2 a specific question asked by a reporter on my thoughts of Olympians being paid. I never asked to be paid to PLAY.”

3rd Tweet: “What I was referencing is there is a lot of Olympic business that happens that athletes are not a part of – and it’s a complicated issue.”

4th Tweet: “BUT my love 4 the game & pride 4 USA motivates me more than any $$$ amount. I repped my country in 2004 when we won the bronze medal and …”

5th Tweet: “…stood proudly to receive our gold medal in 2008 in Beijing. It’s always been an honor for me to be a part of the USA Olympic family…”

6th Tweet: “….and I’m looking forward to doing it again in London this summer.

Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen Suspended

The Miami Marlins have decided to suspend manager Ozzie Guillen for five games due to comments he made about Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

“The Marlins acknowledge the seriousness of the comments attributed to Guillen,” the team said in a statement. “The pain and suffering caused by Fidel Castro cannot be minimized especially in a community filled with victims of the dictatorship.”

On Tuesday morning, Guillen apologized to the city, its Cuban-American community and all Latin Americans for the comments, which were published on Time magazine’s website last week.

Guillen told Time magazine that he loves Castro and respects him for remaining in power for so long. In 2008, he spoke to the Men’s Journal and told them that he admired Castro.

“Fidel Castro,” he said. “He’s a bull—- dictator and everybody’s against him, and he still survives, has power. Still has a country behind him. Everywhere he goes they roll out the red carpet. I don’t admire his philosophy. I admire him.”

This is not the first time Guillen’s public rants have gotten him in trouble. In 2006, he was fined and ordered to undergo sensitivity training by Major League Baseball after using a gay slur during a rant aimed at a newspaper columnist in the Chicago-area.

Ozzie Guillen says he feels guilty and embarrassed and wants to address questions personally.

Lamar Odom and Mavs Go Separate Ways

Lamar Odom and the Mavs have finally decided to separate. This is not surprising at all!!!

“The Mavericks and I have mutually agreed that it’s in the best interest of both parties for me to step away from the team,” Odom said in a statement to ESPN.com. “I’m sorry that things didn’t work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs’ organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success in the defense of their championship.”

This season, Lamar is averaging a career-low 6.6 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game. He also has had his worst shooting season in his career shooting only 35.2 percent from the field and 25.2 percent from three-point range.

“It just didn’t work out like we thought it would,” said a source. “But we wish Lamar nothing but the best.”

Odom will be listed by the Mavs as inactive for the remainder of the season instead of releasing him, which opens the possibility of a trade after the season.

The Lakers are getting bit by the injury bug.

Kobe Bryant sat out shootaround Friday as the Lakers prepared for their game against the Houston Rockets, wearing a protective boot because of a left shin contusion. Bryant will play against the Rockets, however.

Ramon Sessions participated in shootaround but wore a pad to protect his sprained left shoulder, an injury he suffered in the first half against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

Andrew Bynum ducked into the training room early, skipping the final free throw shooting portion of shootaround to receive treatment on his left ankle, which is still sore after he sprained it last Sunday.

Metta World Peace has a sore ankle. Pau Gasol is wearing a sleeve these days to cover his left elbow. Jordan Hill is still out with a sprained right knee.
This does not bode well for them going into the playoffs. The Lakers have a punchers chance to defeat the favorite Oklahoma City Thunder but they must get healthy if they even plan on getting that far.
